Maintenance Assistant (Mechanical)

Working as part of an in-house maintenance team, you will undertake planned and reactive maintenance across the University's academic, residential and sports facilities, primarily on campus with occasional work at city locations.

The role supports multi-skilled Plumbers and other skilled trades and involves routine maintenance, minor repairs, inspections and first line fault investigation across plumbing and associated mechanical building services. This includes hot and cold-water systems, sanitaryware, internal drainage, heating systems, pumps, water softeners, laboratory services and prescribed water hygiene activities, within your training and demonstrated competence.

You will also assist skilled trades with more complex maintenance, repairs, replacement and small installation or alteration works, recognising the limits of your competence and escalating work where qualified trade, specialist or authorised intervention is required.

About you:
- Have relevant vocational training in mechanical, plumbing, building services or general maintenance, or equivalent practical experience sufficient to undertake routine maintenance and minor repairs safely.
- Have practical hands-on experience of planned and reactive maintenance, minor repairs or similar work within a building, engineering or facilities environment.
- Have practical knowledge and experience of hot and cold-water services, sanitaryware, internal drainage, heating systems and associated mechanical building services at a level appropriate to the role.
- Be able to undertake first line fault investigation and practical problem solving, carry out minor repairs within your competence and recognise when work needs to be escalated.
- Be able to work independently on routine tasks and effectively support Multi-skilled Plumbers and other skilled trades on more complex work.
- Have good communication and customer service skills and be able to work effectively with colleagues, students, staff and contractors.
- Be comfortable using mobile devices and digital work management systems.
- Be flexible and able to adapt to changing operational priorities.

A relevant Level 1 or Level 2 City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ or equivalent vocational qualification would be an advantage, as well as water hygiene or Legionella awareness, relevant health and safety training or CSCS card, and awareness of BMS or building controls.

This is a full-time role, working 36.5 hours per week: Monday to Thursday 08:15 to 16:45, and Friday 08:15 to 15:45. To suit operational requirements you may be requested to work flexibly at any time between 7am and 7pm. You will be identified as a 'key worker' for periods of severe winter weather and should live no further than one hour's journey time to the University. A valid UK driving licence is required in order to drive University vehicles.
